protest camp for a resisting feminism
September 13th to 17th, 2023
Dannenrod, near the former occupied Dannenröder Forest
What do you want to know?
About the protest camp
We want to party with you while burning down patriarchy!
The focus of the protest camp and festival is queer-inclusive resistant feminism. We will also critically engage with other systems of oppression, such as the one of nature, and the resulting ecocide, racism and speciesism. Come along for exciting workshops, lectures and discussions, as well as practical skill-shares. Let's strengthen our resistance and empower each other - we are no victims!
Art, culture and fun will be given space - because life should be celebrated. Feminist musicians & artists and nice vegan food await you. Let's create a party atmosphere together, where we feel safe and comfortable. We try our best that you will not be left alone if you have problems and that you will be able to find people for care or fight with you.
We want to create a free space together by creating and experiencing alternative forms of organisation and behaviour. The programme that we have prepared will be published soon. We will also leave room for chilling and input/exchange rounds from you and are looking forward to your contribution!
Our organisation is TINFLA* centred, this also applies to artists and workshop leaders. Solidary people with male/cis or other privileges are welcome. But please think about a good way of dealing with your privileges and criticism beforehand, which is not at the expense of those affected more by oppression.
Time and location
The protest festival will take place from September 13th to 17th, 2023 in Dannenrod at the formerly occupied Dannenröder Forest. To find out how to get there, see "How to get there" and "How to find us" below. We are still looking for people who can come a few days earlier to help with the setup or stay a few days longer for the dismantling. If you can imagine doing this, please let us know in the registration form or by email.
Accommodation
Our site has a beautiful meadow area where you can spend the night in your own tents or under the open sky. There is also a possibility to hang hammocks in the forest, and there is a parking lot for caravans, campers and other vehicles. Not far from the campsite there is also a guesthouse "Gäst*innenhaus" where people already live. If you have an urgent need to sleep under a solid roof, please contact us and we will find a solution.
Food
We would like to provide vegan food for all participants during the protest festival as sustainably and inexpensively as possible. We will prepare two meals a day together, taking into account allergies, intolerances and special requests. The food for these meals will either be rescued from nearby stores and donated, or ordered in bulk. In addition, there will probably be some snack stations for waffles or pizza.
Cooking and cutting vegetables together is one of the most important participatory aspects, and in addition to fostering a sense of group, it also fosters an appreciation for the delicacies we'll be enjoying - and it's just plain fun! So far, the best conversations almost always happen while we're cutting vegetables.
Also, drinking water is available on the premises. So be sure to bring refillable bottles!
Sanitary facilities
On the campsite there will be mainly self-built sinks and ecological composting toilets. These are hygienic, environmentally friendly, opaque and equipped with regular toilet paper. We are mentioning this here because some participants might have to get used to the lack of water flushing.
If you have always wanted to build a composting toilet yourself, you are very welcome to join us from September 1st to 3rd!
Unfortunately there is no lake nearby. For showering we have outdoor showers with cold or warm water (depending on the weather). Since the water may seep into the ground, we strongly urge everyone to use ONLY biodegradable shampoo and shower gel or biodegradable soap and toothpaste!
Finance
The festival is partially funded by grants that we apply for in advance. However, we rely on donations to cover infrastructure, artist and workshop costs. Our aim is to support the development of feminist art through the festival. Therefore, we need adequate financial support.
We recommend a donation of 50-70 € for participation in the festival, not including the recommended donation for food. Since we need to order dry goods in advance, we recommend an additional 5 € per day for this. Your donation can be dropped off at the Infopoint. Decide for yourself what you can pay for the festival and distribute it in solidarity. Often we are used to giving money only in direct exchange for goods. However, we think it is important to break this dynamic and encourage a different approach to money by locating and beginning to see money as a community resource that can be used communally.
We want to make the festival, art and education accessible to the financially disadvantaged, so don't be afraid to come even if you can't pay the money.
There are already some costs involved in the preparation of the festival. If you can already donate something to support "Schall & Rauch", we would be very happy!
The festival is organized by our non-profit association "Wilde Malve".
You can donate to this IBAN: DE77 4306 0967 1302 8010 00
(If you want, you can get a donation receipt and deduct it from your taxes).
Kids
Dear parents and children, Schall&Rauch is open as a place and event for all ages and we are very happy to welcome everyone. All in all, there are a lot of great green spaces, the forest nearby and of course a lot of nice, playful, sunny and child-loving people. However, there are danger zones and it can be very noisy in the evenings, especially on the weekend. We would like to point out that children should be well supervised with regard to these sources of disturbance and danger. Supervising children can also be done by a self-organized group and there are also quiet areas for camping. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your questions, needs and wishes so that we can adapt to both young and old.
Pets
We kindly ask you to find alternative accommodation for your non-human companions during the Protestival. We already have dogs living on site. However, we are afraid that the hustle and bustle, the presence of children or loud music in the evenings could be very stressful for the animals. We also want to keep the number of animals as small as possible out of consideration for people with allergies and people who are not comfortable around dogs. If you would like to bring an animal with you for therapeutic reasons or if you are unable to find any other accommodation, please note that you will need to supervise your animal closely and do not hesitate to contact us so that we are aware of this.
Fire
The area has many grassy areas with a tendency to dry out straw and other fuel. There are designated fire areas. Outside of these areas, any type of fire is prohibited depending on the wildfire level. This means no candles, torches, fire pois, cigarettes, etc. .... However, there are also concrete and wind-protected areas where we can symbolically burn the patriarchy and smoke. This should be arranged with us and with the consent of all present. Please be very careful with the fire and take care of your fellow human beings and the environment.

Participation in Schall&Rauch is at your own legal risk. We, the planning team, cannot be held liable.

Our self-understanding
Together we are creating a long weekend in which we want to test our skills and our consciousness for a more just and equitable world. Join us for art and culture, lectures and conversations, drama and music, hands-on workshops and good food. We want to create a festival that reflects the good life. A sustainable place to meet freely and openly, to enjoy and to build what will build us up!
Participation
Together we want to create, change, recreate and build. The realization of a fun week is based on self-organization and collective responsibility. Open structures allow everyone to be part of the team, with unrestricted offers and open task sharing.
Justice
What do we need to build ecological, queer-feminist and radically democratic communities? What ideas already exist? How can we learn from each other to answer these questions? In preparation for the festival, we have already been working on awareness structures, sustainable structures if possible, and vegan food for the festival.
Solidarity
Respecting the boundaries of others is central. We want a space that is sensitive to discrimination, so that as many people as possible feel comfortable and can contribute. At the beginning of the festival we want to agree on what this interaction looks like.
We are committed to open, respectful, and loving interactions, creating a place where everyone feels comfortable and can communicate openly. Everyone is welcome. Sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, anthropocentrism, heteronormativity and any other form of discrimination have NO place on the premises. We distance ourselves from a truncated critique of capitalism, which often leads to conspiratorial or pseudo-scientific views. We are committed to a solidary, sustainable, domination- and hierarchy-free coexistence.
The program
The focus of the festival is on queer-inclusive feminism. There will be workshops, skillshares and roundtables on a variety of topics. For example, an introduction and discussion about what it means to live transinclusive or decolonial feminism, skillshares by and for FLINTA* about car maintenance, menstruation, herb gathering or rock climbing, exchange rounds about living in polyamorous relationships and building anti-capitalist birth houses, and much more. .....
We want to leave enough time for you to relax and for spontaneous discussions to be held. Art, culture and fun should not be neglected, because life should be celebrated. Therefore, feminist musicians and artists as well as theater, dance and sports programs are waiting for you.
Our preliminary program is presented below. It is still subject to change and there will be more acts and workshops to come and there will also be slots for your own spontaneous ideas.
Would you like to lead a skillshare or a workshop by yourself? Then please contact us by email.
Like the festival itself, the selection of artists and workshop leaders will be TINFLA*-centric. Of course, we are also happy if solidary cis-men want to take over the critical masculinity rounds etc.
The program will change, acts will be added and we will keep slots open for spontaneous ideas from you!

And this is how you can participate!
We need your help for the realization of the protest camp! It doesn't matter if it's cooking in the Küfa, coordination of the construction or at the info point, moderation, shifts as a medic, at the bar or cleaning up afterwards. And of course all the tents, stages, toilets and showers wouldn't be where they are if a lot of people hadn't set them up beforehand.
Be part of the fun! During your visit you can sign up for shifts at the Infopoint and help to keep the infrastructure running. You will also meet some nice people.
And if you're really into it, come earlier or stay longer. There are lots of ways to get involved in the construction and dismantling of the protest camp: building, painting, decorating, cooking,... We are looking forward to your help during the two weekends before the festival starting on 9/1/23 or the days before starting on 9/11/23 and during the dismantling until 9/20/23.
To help us plan, please sign up using this form!
The map
You will find us in 35315 Homberg (Ohm) - Dannenrod
in the Buchhainer Str. 8 and at the edge of the field and forest of the street Zur Waldecke
Our coordinates are
50.761884, 9.028935
Getting to the protest camp
Arrival by bus
The Homberg (Ohm)-Dannenrod bus stop is within sight of the guesthouse.
From the train station in Alsfeld there is a direct bus line to Dannenrod.
From the train stations Stadtallendorf and Kirchhain you can take the bus to Dannenrod. Please note that on weekends there is only a call bus. The bus stop Schweinsberg-Weidenhausen can be reached directly from both Kirchhain and Stadtallendorf - from there it is about an hour's walk to the house.
Arrival by train and bike
Yay! The Deutschlandticket/49€-Ticket is finally here.
It's best to take the train to Kirchhain. The bike route is signposted towards Homberg to Schweinsberg, then right at the roundabout and finally uphill to Dannenrod - check the route carefully or call first.
Carpooling
It is likely that some people will have the opportunity to travel by car. To make it worth your while and for the sake of the environment, you are welcome to give someone a ride. You can find requests and offers in our Carpool Center.
Arrival by train with the possibility of a shuttle
If the above two possibilities are not suitable for you, we can offer you a shuttle service with our car from the train station Stadtallendorf or Kirchhain or even better from the bus stop Schweinsberg-Weidenhausen.
Awareness
We are aware that we cannot offer a SaveSpace at the festival. We live in a society where sexism, racism and other forms of discrimination and oppression are part of everyday life. Unfortunately, even in front of spaces and events with emancipatory claims, attacks of this kind are not going to stop.
Violence is not only an obvious physical attack, but also begins with (un)intentional crossing of boundaries and verbal attacks, e.g. through discriminatory remarks or by belittling the perception of those affected. Unfortunately, sexualized violence at events can never be completely excluded. For this reason, we are subject to the power of definition of those affected. However, we can help to make it more difficult and offer support to those affected.
It is our intention that there should be people on the premises who are there for you in the event of an incident. At Schall&Rauch there will be an awareness team consisting of several FLINTA*, recognizable by their bright pink headgear, who will be available at all times. For this we need your help!
Do you have experience in an awareness team or can you imagine taking on this role? Then get in touch with us! We have an awareness concept and will train you. You can also contact us by mail before and after the festival.
If you don't see anyone from the awareness team during the festival, you can contact the people at the Infopoint. They are also in constant contact with the Awareness Team. More information and tips on what to do in various emergencies will also be available on the festival grounds and at the Infopoint.
Together we want to create a space where people can look after each other, feel comfortable and address situations where they see themselves or others being mistreated. Keep in mind that there will be people with different needs, as well as children and teenagers under the age of 18. Be considerate, help each other, and look out for yourselves and those around you.
If you are under 18 and would like to attend the festival without a parent or guardian, you will need a you will need a "Muttizettel" signed by your legal guardians and an adult companion.
This is where you can find the Muttizettel.
Break down barriers!
...but unfortunately the conditions on the ground present a number of obstacles. Among other things, we are in the field and in the woods, which means that the ground is not always level, and the light conditions get worse as dusk falls.
Nevertheless, we will do our best to overcome these obstacles. If you have any questions or suggestions on how to make the festival accessible for you, please send us an email. We will get back to you and try to address your needs and find solutions together.
